From one trainee to another

When I read your postcard, my heart immediately went out to you. I went through basic training for the Air Force a little over a year ago (coming up on the anniversary of my graduation soon!) and totally remember how much the letters meant to me. I got letters from my parents every day, but I wish my friends had written more often. And if you get to mail letters as seldom as I and the others in my flight did, then I'm doubly moved that you chose to send in a secret.

Like many others who have posted before me, I also want to say that I'm proud of you and the decision you made to serve the country. It's a huge choice to make, especially these days, and I think everybody who enlists deserves the reception of a hero upon coming home.

I don't know what your job is or where you'll be sent next (assuming you're going to tech school next), but on the off-chance that you're going to Keesler Air Force Base (there were a few Navy [squadrons?] there for school), I wish you the best of luck! :P It was terribly hot when I was there last summer, so I'm mostly hoping you end up someplace cooler. Mandatory physical training is about as far from fun as you can get when it's out in the hot southern sun.

My thoughts are with you as you continue on the military path. I hope it treats you well and changes your life for the better. I also hope that this blog-- filled by people who don't know you, but care for you-- makes up for the lack of letters you received.
